Home Business 30 - Start And operate A Business Consulting Service
A business consultant works with the management of a business to solve certain problems, improve certain areas,
reduce costs or increase profitability of the business concerned. Business consultants get paid high rates on a per
hourly basis.
You can start up and operate a home based consulting business from your own home. Although you will be spending
time out at your clients' businesses, the complete business is controlled, operated and managed as a home based
entity.
In order to become a successful business consultant, you do not need to have owned or managed your own successful
business. It is also neither a requirement to you having held any previous management positions. You will instead
need the ability to market yourself and have a superior understanding of the area in which you decide to specialize
in as a business consultant.
Your first step in deciding on the path to becoming a business consultant is to do an honest evaluation of your
skills and experience. You might, for instance, be especially proficient in either marketing, admin, distribution,
accounting, etc. The important thing to look for when you make a self assessment, apart from any educational
strengths you have, is any special training and on-the-job training you may have had.
If you are starting up on a small scale from home on a part time basis - which is recommended - you don't need a
fancy executive style office. A corner of the dining room, a spare bedroom, the garage or even the basement will do
quite nicely. You also don't need to bear the added expense by getting a business phone - your home phone will
suffice. You'll also need a computer to type up presentations, quotations and proposals - your family computer will
do quite nicely here.
Once you have decided on what area of consulting you will specialize in, you need to set your office. No employees
are required for this home business. You can make use of an answer machine when you are out or get a family member
to assist with answering the phone for you. The mundane light business tasks can be done by yourself when you are
not consulting.
The next stage is to get the word out about your consulting service. The best way to do this is to take out an ad
in specific business magazines and newspapers. You can also place advertisements in the Yellow Pages. Another great
way to get clients is by using direct marketing techniques. Here you will rent a mailing list of businesses in your
area, put together a sales page and mail out to them.
Once you get people interested in your offer, you set up a meeting with them to discuss the matter further. Let
them tell you what they need and you jot this down. You then leave telling them that you will put together a
proposal, time frame and a quote and revert to them in a few days.
You then work out these aspects which you type up at home on your busines letterhead. Research what other
consultants charge for similar services so that you will get an idea how much to charge for your service. Once your
paperwork is ready, you submit it to the business. If they accept and sign your order, you can now proceed to offer
your services as arranged.
